Human rights court agrees to hear Guantanamo detainee case

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on Friday agreed to hear the case of Guantanamo  detainee and Algerian national Djamel Ameziane. The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) , co-counsel for Ameziane, states that Ameziane has been held at Guantanamo Bay without any charge or trial for more than 10 years.

“Indefinite detention is not an option. Detained men must be afforded fair trials or released. It is long past the time for impunity at Guantanamo to end, and for the closure of Guantanamo to be addressed. Today’s IACHR decision is a step in that direction.” J Wells Dixon, Senior Staff Attorney at CCR

The IACHR will investigate whether the US’s failure to transfer Ameziane is in compliance with international human rights law.

TURKEY PURCHASES LIBYAN OIL, ABANDONS IRAN

Turkey is planning to begin importing oil from Libya instead of Iran as it seeks to comply with U.S. demands that countries reduce their dependence on the Islamic republic’s natural resources, according to Energy Minister Taner Yıldız.

“We will begin purchasing crude oil from Libya via the private Turkish Petroleum Refineries Company [TÜPRAŞ] in 2012. We believe that this was the right step to take, to boost our commercial relationship with Libya and help with the normalization of the country. We will reduce the amount of crude oil purchased from Iran accordingly,” Yıldız was quoted as saying March 30 by Anatolia news agency.

Turkey will purchase about 1 million tons of crude oil from Libya in 2012, he said.

1932 – Richard Spikes invented/patented automatic gear shift.

Inventors often toil for their entire lifetimes creating devices which have beneficial effects on society for years – yet that inventor might gain recognition only after he or she has passed away. For others, even after they have gone, recognition is slow in coming despite their great contributions. Richard Spikes is such a person.

Richard Spikes of San Francisco, California patented or developed the following inventions:

  • railroad semaphore (1906)
  • automatic car washer (1913)
  • automobile directional signals (1913) – manufactured by Pierce Arrow
  • beer keg tap (1910) – purchased by Milwaukee Brewing Company.
  • self-locking rack for billiard cues (1910)
  • continuous contact trolley pole (1919) – used on on the famous San Francisco Key Line.
  • combination milk bottle opener and cover (1926)
  • method and apparatus for obtaining average samples and temperature of tank liquids (1931)
  • improved automatic gear shift (1932) – licensed the patent for $100,000
  • transmission and shifting thereof (1933)
  • automatic shoe shine chair (1939)
  • multiple barrel machine gun (1940)
  • horizontally swinging barber chair (1950)
  • automatic safety brake (1962) – year Richard Spikes died.
